What is it?

Oral surgery is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on surgical procedures to treat conditions affecting the mouth, teeth, gums, and jaw. These procedures are typically required when non-surgical treatments are not effective or when a more complex issue arises, such as tooth extractions, jaw realignment, or the treatment of oral diseases. Oral surgery is often necessary for impacted wisdom teeth, dental implants, corrective jaw surgery, and addressing facial injuries.

Why is it done?

Oral surgery can involve a range of procedures, from minor extractions to more extensive surgeries. Depending on the complexity of the treatment, the procedure may be performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia. Here's a brief overview of how some common oral surgeries are done:

  • Tooth Extractions: A dentist or oral surgeon may remove a tooth that is decayed, damaged, or impacted. For wisdom teeth, especially those that are impacted or cause pain, a surgical extraction may be necessary.

  • Dental Implants: This involves the placement of a titanium post into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. After healing, a crown is attached to the implant, restoring both function and appearance.

  • Jaw Surgery: Also known as orthognathic surgery, this corrects misalignments of the jaw that can affect chewing, speaking, or breathing. This is typically done in collaboration with an orthodontist.

  • Biopsy or Removal of Growths: If abnormal tissue is detected in the mouth, an oral surgeon may perform a biopsy to determine whether the tissue is cancerous or benign. In some cases, growths or cysts may need to be removed surgically.

  • Facial Trauma Repair: For injuries to the mouth, jaw, or face, oral surgery can restore function and appearance by realigning fractured bones or repairing soft tissue damage.
