 Endodontic treatments with Microscope assistance

What is it?

Endodontic treatment, commonly known as a root canal, is a procedure used to treat infection or damage inside the tooth, specifically in the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue). During a root canal, the infected or damaged pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is restored to its natural function.

Steps in an Endodontic Treatment (Microscope assisted):

  • Diagnosis: We take digital X-rays and conduct a comprehensive examination using magnification from a dental microscope. This allows us to detect tiny fractures, hidden canals, and subtle signs of infection that might otherwise go unnoticed.

  • Pulp Removal: The microscope enables us to locate all root canals and remove the infected or damaged pulp with high accuracy, reducing the risk of missed tissue or untreated areas.

  • Cleaning and Shaping: With enhanced visibility, we meticulously clean, disinfect, and shape the root canal system. The microscope helps us navigate complex anatomy and ensure no debris or bacteria remain.

  • Sealing: Once the canals are clean and dry, we fill them with a biocompatible material. The microscope allows for a precise seal, which is critical for preventing reinfection and ensuring long-term success.

  • Restoration: After the root canal is completed, a crown or filling is placed to restore the tooth’s shape and function. Microscope-guided preparation ensures the restoration fits perfectly and supports the tooth’s structural integrity.

Why is it done?

Endodontic treatment is done to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted due to infection, severe decay, or injury. If left untreated, the infection inside the tooth can spread to the surrounding bone and tissue, causing further damage.

Reasons for Needing Endodontic Treatment:

  • Tooth Infection: Deep decay or a cracked tooth can allow bacteria to reach the pulp inside the tooth, leading to an infection or abscess.

  • Severe Tooth Pain: If you’re experiencing persistent pain, especially when chewing or touching the tooth, it could be a sign of an infection or nerve damage that requires endodontic treatment.

  • Sensitivity to Heat or Cold: Unexplained sensitivity that lingers long after the stimulus has been removed may indicate that the pulp is damaged or infected.

  • Trauma or Injury: A blow to the tooth (such as from an accident or sports injury) can cause damage to the pulp, even if there are no visible cracks or breaks in the tooth.

  • Preventing Tooth Loss: Without treatment, an infected or damaged tooth can lead to tooth loss. Root canal therapy can save the tooth and restore its function.
